CLIC24 Endurance Cycle Event - 2009 Sports Therapy & Massage 4 Injured Riders
In aid of CLIC Sargent
Following last year's sunshine event the 2009 Clic24 charity 24 hour endurance cycling marathon, in aid of CLIC Sargent, became a complete mudfest. But did anybody care? Not likely! The organisers, headed by Neil Wilkins, the Event Director, did a fantastic job of keeping spirits up and lap times down and everything ran as smoothly as the well oiled gear changes of some of these very expensive mountain bikes (except for a couple of power outages, but we won't go there!).
Inspiringly, the rain did hold off until exactly the moment the starting hooter sounded at 12 o'clock on Saturday, and then the heavens opened, for pretty much most of the weekend, including the pinging and drum roll of hailstones on faces and canvas, clearing up again just as everyone had packed their soggy tents and belongings into a huge convoy of cars, trailers and trucks, only to be greeted by a sunny drive home. Typical! But that's the British weather for you.
Now in it's eighth year and gaining in popularity every year, the CLIC24 event has raised over £275,000 for children's cancer and leukaemia charity CLIC Sargent. An absolutely fantastic achievement by everyone involved!
The course is a highly-rated, 10 mile track and road course, over the Mendip Hills, and this year's event was held on the weekend of 16/17 May from the Charterhouse Centre near Blagdon in the Mendip Hills. 500 riders braved the elements and their own demons as they raced (sorry, IT'S NOT A RACE!), rode, over the tough terrain, encountering such obstacles as gullies, stoney paths, low lying branches, barbed wire, muddy puddles, slippery grass banks and the odd half asleep driver.

I was delighted to be able to get involved with this event over the last two years. Not as a rider, you understand, I don't think my stamina would extend to one lap, let alone the 21 laps completed by the top solo rider, Chris Cooknell, or the team lap champions : Bike City (Payne, Grundy, Williams, Taylor) who managed a whopping 31 laps. My area of expertise was proving beneficial in the sports massage tent, where I saw a wide variety of calf, ham, gluteal, and other muscle strains, cramps and injuries, including knee problems, lower back strain, neck pain and aching shoulders, ligament tears and just plain old fatigue.
Looking forward to 2010, when we can do it all again.
Provisional date for CLIC24 2010 - will be on the weekend of 8/9 May 2010.
