London Underground Bombings
7th July 2005.

London Underground Bombings and the Psychological Impact on Survivors.

The psychological impact among the survivors of the July bombings in London could linger long after their physical injuries have healed, say the experts.

The weeks, months and possibly even years that follow the terrorist attacks on the three tube trains and double decker bus in London, England, may leave an emotional residue that can arise at any time among the survivors, as shocking flashbacks, nightmares, and personality changes which leave the sufferer struggling to lead a 'normal' life.

I know how deeply it affected me, and how sad I felt, to think that people, ordinary human beings, could have so much hate inside them that they felt able to stoop so low as to blow up innocent travellers in this despicable and callous way. And, for the people who were killed or hurt, most of whom probably held no ill-feeling toward any other people or nation on the planet, to suffer the pain of somebody else's malcontent.
My spiritual heart just bleeds..............

For those involved, either directly or as witnesses, one of the main problems they will face in the future will be their memories, the what if's, the maybe's and the if only's. This can induce a serious and common health condition known as PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

What is PTSD?

It is normal for all people to feel that no matter what they have faced or lived with, in the present or the past, no matter how extreme the traumatic event, physical or emotional, they feel they should be able to carry on, unaffected, no matter whatever is going on in their inner psyche, or in their physical body.

This is of course nonsense!
It is not unusual for people to face situations that are so traumatic that they may become unable to cope and function 'normally' in their daily lives. Some people become so distressed by memories of the trauma that they begin to live their lives, in a dreamlike state or on medication, or with the numbness associated with denial, trying desperately to avoid any reminders of what happened to them.

With PTSD, the stress caused by the trauma can affect all aspects of a person’s life, including their mental, emotional and physical well-being. Research is beginning to suggest that prolonged trauma may even disrupt and alter brain chemistry.

What are the Physical and/or Emotional Symptoms of PTSD?

PTSD is an anxiety disorder, usually originating with a terrifying and traumatic physical or emotional ordeal or event, causing the person who survived the event to have persistent, frightening thoughts and memories. These can be recurring nightmares or flashbacks, of the ordeal. Physical or emotional reactions are common, such as panic attacks, heart palpitations, stomach problems, itchy skin or chills when faced with a reminder of the event. Persons with PTSD can often feel chronically, emotionally numb. Insomnia, anger, irritability, hyper (always on a high) or sedentary (switched off), low self esteem, depression or disassociation from the world are all classic symptoms.

Reminders may be associated with places, faces, situations, thoughts and movement (chutes, water slides, pointed objects like brollies, roundabouts, lifts, escalators, gangs of children in the street, somebody in dark clothing hiding in a doorway), ........... anything really that is associated with the specific event.

This can lead to alcohol abuse, drug abuse, suicidal tendencies and lots of other self-destructive behaviour. Unexplained pains, stress related diseases or conditions such as chronic fatique syndrome or fibromyalgia, eating and breathing difficulties, headaches, stomach/digestive problems and sleep disorders are other physical conditions that can manifest with PTSD.

There is a Myth about PTSD!

There is a myth about PTSD that says that it only affects the weak. Don't believe this for a minute! Your average Marine, Royal, American or Russian, only gets to be one if he's tough. War trauma victims, including soldiers, are increasingly getting PTSD symptoms because of the way modern warfare looks for total destruction rather than dissuasion.

So, who is at risk of PTSD?

Well, were talking about a terrorist act, which is, maybe, the extreme end of the scale, if there is such a thing. But, any major catastrophic event, such as a plane crash, or a ship sinking, an industrial explosion or chemical disaster is also routinely seen as a trigger for PTSD symptoms.

Death of someone close, especially if rapid, life-threatening illnesses and invasive surgery, war (veterans and civilians), natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunami, tornadoes, hurricanes), being caught in a fire, car accident, mugging, carjacking, rape, sexual assault, violence (work, home, school) and domestic abuse, can all be reasons cited as the origin of PTSD symptoms.

Have you been affected by the London Bombings? Were you There? Are You Now Seeking Help for Your PTSD Symptoms?

There is no doubt, and history will back me up here, Londoners are a resiliant bunch! And, long may that continue.
Some of those rescued from above and below ground on the 7th July 2005, won't be so lucky as they come to terms with the physical and emotional trauma of the bombing incident. This includes the people who raced to their rescue, from all the emergency services. There are people alive right now because of what the emergency service personnel did that day. We all owe them, Big Time!

That is not to say that PTSD is inevitable for everyone. Far from it. Most will cope and recover really well and be able to get on with their lives without too much reference to the earlier tragedy. Mostly there will be a short term 'rattling' as control of their lives was handed over to a stranger for the duration of the rescue and subsequent recovery. The predictable nature of the way we live will have sustained a 'ripple' or two and the 'out of step' nature of this will take a little while to recover, but it will.

There will be a small percentage who no longer feel safe and their lives will become unstable. They will feel anxious, depressed and generally be much more fearful, with the outcome being some of the symptoms we have discussed earlier.

The Signs: If you have a relative or partner who was involved with the bombings and is now having nightmares, recurrent flashbacks, anxiety or distress, who avoids talking about it, won't listen to the radio, TV or read newspapers, won't go on buses or the underground and is fearful of certain sights and sounds, suspect that they may be exibiting signs of PTSD and encourage them to get help. Recognizing the problem and doing something is half way toward recovery. Actually, more than half!

I have been an EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Practitioner, Healer and Therapist for several years now, and have helped many people come to terms with all kinds of traumatic event. Events that are affecting the lives of people to the extent that they no longer have a life and are self sabotaging their own ability to recover because of the severity of their trauma. This manifests itself in many different forms, including, phobias, emotional problems and physical symptoms, many of which are mirrored in the descriptions above.

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) responds surprisingly well to EFT. In most cases the intense feelings from those flashbacks and intrusive memories either vanish or are materially reduced within a few minutes of applying EFT. Also, it has been found that repeated applications of EFT often eliminate these feelings permanently so that they no longer re-appear on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

For those who don't achieve instant relief in the clinical setting of a therapists room, EFT is very easy to learn and is a skill that you can take away with you to use at a time convenient to you. With persistence and the correct application, you are likely to improve or completely resolve the problem in a relatively short time.

Many cases will be treated with psychotherapy or medication over the next few months and years. However, some of these cases will be a little more persistant or difficult and more sophisticated approaches are usually necessary to deal with them. EFT is ideally designed to address these difficult emotional issues and, once properly applied, many emotional issues may be seen to subside permanently.

Therefore, if you were there at the London bombings incident on the 7th July 2005, or were affected by it in anyway because of the traumatic way it came over on the news, or because you knew someone involved, please get in touch and I would be happy to try to help you with your symptoms of PTSD.

You just need to contact me at the email address below or write to me at the address on the Contact Page. Anyone in the UK without news of their relatives in the area should contact the Metropolitan Police Casualty Hotline on 0870 1566 344.

Can Spiritual Healing help with high intensity trauma? ... I have to say, that I am convinced that it can!! Healers cannot and should never, promise a cure. But, at the same time, none of us should limit the power of our own Healing Energy, once it's been triggered and given direction. I'm certain there is little wrong with any of us that is not helped in some way by Spiritual Healing, Energy Healing or Reiki.
If it is in your belief system to try, who knows what is achievable?
