What are Chakras and how do they affect our health?
Chakra is an ancient word meaning "Wheel of Light". The Chakras (there are 7 main ones) are non-physical energy transfer centres located about one inch from the physical body. The 7 main chakras are located near the major nerve plexuses of the body that emerge from the spine. So they are found between the base of the spine and the top of the head. It's worth noting also that they have a front of body and back of body aspect. Chakras have no physical form, but traditional teachings liken them to a flower, with the petals equating to the energy channels and frequencies through which the energy flows. This illustration is useful as a visual aid, because flowers can be closed or open, equating to the ability of the chakra to transfer this energy. Chakra energy is the "Life-force" energy known in varying cultures as Prana, Chi, Ki or Universal Energy. It is energy that comes from the Universe, available to everyone.

Chakras have a very positive effect on the mind and body, and for maximum health it is very important to keep these chakras open, unblocked and in balance with each other. Energy that enters the body through these chakras is directed to where it is needed in the body and so is able to promote healing.

The Crown chakra is the most important, often called the Master Chakra. The Crown chakra has the ability to open up and balance the other six chakras, allowing Universal energy to flow backwards and forwards between the universe, the physical body, the spiritual body and the Earth.
Chakras are affected by many things; like stress, for example. Shock, fear, emotional trauma and accidents, among other things, can cause a chakra to become blocked or unbalanced. This affects its ability to transfer energy efficiently, and normal functioning of the organs and other body parts in that particular area will be disrupted. Physical problems may develop, such as talking difficulties when something affects the throat chakra, or digestive problems when the blockage is in the solar plexus chakra, for example.

Rebalancing can once again achieve proper functioning of the chakras, and a restoration of good health. Chakras are the locations in the body's energy field with which healers work, and you too can work with your own energy field for self-healing. This is achieved by meditation and/or healing, either distant or present. Self-healing can also be achieved by an individual working on the front aspect of their own chakras.

THE CROWN CHAKRA - 7th Chakra
The Crown Chakra. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health.

The Crown Chakra is located at the crown, or top of the head, and is associated with knowing. It is the centre of our connection with the Divine, and is where we integrate spirituality with our personality. It is the centre of spiritual experience, awakening and enlightenment.
Sanskrit Name: Sahasrara meaning "thousand-spoked wheel" or "thousand petalled lotus flower".
Location in body: Crown of the head.
Colour/s: VIOLET, white, amethyst, quartz opal.
Sound or Mantra: OM or AUM and musical note B.
Element: Thought, spiritual awareness.
Functions of the Self: Self knowledge and awareness. Wisdom and self consciousness. Spiritual questing.
Positives/Emotion: Inspirational and trusting. Spiritual and devoted. Faith in a higher being or higher self.
Negatives/Emotion: Depression, confusion and alienation. Lack of inspiration. Learning difficulties and limiting beliefs.
Gland or Organs: Pineal gland, pituitary, brain, cerebral cortex, central nervous system, right eye.
Gemstones or Minerals: Amethyst, diamond, quartz crystal, selenite.
Foods, Herbs or Incense: Purple fruits and vegetables. Myrrh, frankinsence, jasmine, lavender, mandarin, sandalwood, neroli, rose, rosewood.

THE BROW CHAKRA or THIRD EYE - 6th Chakra
The Brow Chakra, or The Third Eye. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health. The Brow Chakra is sometimes called the Sixth Chakra, or the Third Eye Chakra. The front aspect is to do with conceptual understanding, the back aspect to do with logic. This chakra is the centre of intuition and of psychic powers and experience.
Sanskrit Name: Ajna, meaning "to perceive" or "to command".
Location in body: Between the eyebrows.
Colour/s: INDIGO, dark blue.
Sound or Mantra: OM or AUM and musical note A.
Element: Light.
Functions of the Self: Intuition, insight, self-reflection and wisdom. Spiritual awareness.
Positives/Emotion: Intuition and wisdom. Insight and imagination. Clairvoyance and concentration. Intelligence and reason.
Negatives/Emotion: Lack of concentration, headaches and bad dreams associated with fear. Fear of the unknown, emotional denial. Tension, jealousy and insecurity. Visual problems and headaches.
Gland or Organs: Pineal, pituitary, eyes, nose, sinuses, ears, spine, left eye. Endocrine system.
Gemstones or Minerals: Lapis lazuli, amethyst, sodalite, quartz, sapphire and tourmaline.
Foods, Herbs or Incense: Purple fruits and vegetables. Mugwort, juniper, rosemary.

THE THROAT CHAKRA - 5th Chakra
The Throat Chakra. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health. The Throat Chakra is located in the front and back of the throat. Sometimes called the Fifth Chakra, it brings energy to the thyroid, bronchi, lungs and alimentary canal. It is the centre of expression, articulation and communication.
Sanskrit Name: Vishuddha meaning "purification" or "purest of the pure".
Location in body: At the level of the Throat.
Colour/s: BLUE, sky blue.
Sound or Mantra: HAM and musical note G.
Element: Sound, ether.
Functions of the Self: Speech, self expression, communication. Vibration and sound. Growth and metabolism.
Positives/Emotion: Creative expression in verbal communication. Truth and knowledge. Gentleness and kindness. Reliability and loyalty.
Negatives/Emotion: Depression and ignorance. Lack of discernment and discretion. Thyroid and throat problems. Fear of public speaking.
Gland or Organs: Thyroid, parathyroids, larynx, throat, mouth, hypothalamus, lungs.
Gemstones or Minerals: Lapis lazuli, turquoise, sodalite, aquamarine, azurite, blue topaz, celestite.
Foods, Herbs or Incense: Blue fruits and vegetables. Chamomile, myrrh.

THE HEART CHAKRA - 4th Chakra
The Heart Chakra. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health. The Heart Chakra is located in the heart, and through it we sense love. The front aspect is related to love, the rear aspect to will and conscious choice. Sometimes referred to as the Fourth Chakra, it is the centre for love, emotion and affection in all it's forms.
Sanskrit Name: Anahata meaning "unstruck" or "unbeaten".
Location in body: The heart.
Colour/s: GREEN, pink, vermillion red.
Sound or Mantra: YAM and musical note F.
Element: Air.
Functions of the Self: The main doorway for love and life from the Higher Self to be received and given out. Moves life energy around the body. Blood and circulation.
Positives/Emotion: Unconditional love, divine unconditional love, tenderness, caring, compassion, openness, peace, harmony, acceptance, understanding, contentment.
Negatives/Emotion: Jealousy, love suppression, shyness, loneliness, stress, heart problems, asthma, lung disease, emotional trauma, hate, vascular problems.

THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA - 3rd Chakra
The Solar Plexus Chakra. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health. The Solar Plexus Chakra is located where the thoracic vertebrae meets the Lumbar vertebrae. Sometimes called the Navel or Third Chakra, it is the energy centre of power, emotion and our connection to others.
Sanskrit Name: Manipura meaning "brilliant as a gem" or "lustrous jewel".
Location in body: At the level of the umbilicus, or solar plexus.
Colour/s: YELLOW.
Sound or Mantra: RAM and musical note E.
Element: Fire.
Functions of the Self: Our emotional seat, ego. Freedom and power. Digestive and metabolic processes.
Positives/Emotion: Our store of emotional energy. Self assertion and will power. Personal mastery and success. Warmth to others and a sense of belonging.
Negatives/Emotion: Stress, anger, hate, trepidation, fear, weak willed, poor self esteem. Our "hurt" centre (where it gets you when somebody hurts you emotionally), fear of rejection, fear of criticism and paranoia. Digestive problems, acid, ulcer, chronic fatigue and hypertension.
Gland or Organs: Nervous system, digestive system, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, adrenal glands, liver, muscles.
Gemstones or Minerals: Citrine, amber, gold, tigers eye, yellow topaz.
Foods, Herbs or Incense: Yellow fruits and vegetables. Water.

THE SACRAL CHAKRA or HARA - 2nd Chakra
The Sacral Chakra. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health. The Sacral Chakra is located in the genitals, just above the pubic bone. Sometimes called the Second or Genital Chakra, it is the centre through which we sense emotions and our creatives urges. It is the centre of human sexuality and sensuality.
Sanskrit Name: Svadhishthana meaning "your own dwelling place".
Location in body: From the lower abdomen to the Navel.
Colour/s: ORANGE.
Sound or Mantra: VAM and musical note D.
Element: Water.
Functions of the Self: Sexual desire and procreation. Emotional response. Physical vitality and sexuality. Food and appetite. Deep feelings.
Positives/Emotion: Sexual, passionate pleasure and love. Health, happiness and desire. Togetherness and family. Tolerance and understanding of others.
Negatives/Emotion: Unnatural sexual domination or deviation. Jealousy, envy, confusion and intolerance. Sexual difficulty or excretion problems. Impotence, frigididy, depression, purposelessness or lack of meaning.

THE BASE/ROOT CHAKRA - 1st Chakra
The Root or Base Chakra. Chakra Awareness, the Path to Better Health. The Base Chakra is located in the base of the spine (the coccyx), and is sometimes called the Root or First Chakra. It is our connection, our foundation, to the Earth and to the physical world around us. When in balance, we have physical vitality and strength.
Sanskrit Name: Muladhara meaning "root, support and central support".
Symbolizing: Solidity, strength and firmness.
Location in body: At the base of the spine. At the coccyx.
Colour/s: RED, black.
Sound or Mantra: LAM and musical note C.
Element: Earth.
Functions of the Self: A connection with Mother Earth. The energy connection to ground. The seat of vitality and life-force. Self preservation and instinct. Tribal or family identity and loyalty.
Positives/Emotion: Positive grounding makes for stability, success, health and security. Survival instinct. Raw power. Trust.
Negatives/Emotion: Insecurity, cowardly, impatience, anger, greed, self-centred. Spinal conditions, digestion problems, elimination problems.
Gland or Organs: Spinal column, adrenal glands, skeleton, kidneys, spleen, colon, legs and feet. Lymphatic system and elimination system.
Gemstones or Minerals: Ruby, garnet, bloodstone, smoky quartz, obsidian.
