The Benefits of Sports Massage
Athletes want to lead the field and outperform their competitors or their own times; In short, they want to WIN! Sports massage is a major component of any serious athletes training program. Sports Massage and Sports Injury Rehabilitation GIVE YOURSELF THE WINNING EDGE, book your sports massage NOW and watch your body reach new heights of performance!

Very few professional athletes or sports teams are without their own professional massage therapist now. A sports therapist is regarded as an important member of the team. You can't motivate somebody who is tired, has inflexible joints, has injuries both old and new, has tension and muscle cramp. Athletes benefit from sports massage because it addresses all these issues and allows training to be both effective and positive. Sports Massage and Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Massage allows the body to heal faster, so, whether you just want to get back into training quicker, or you have a new event to prepare for, your massage therapist will make that happen in the fastest time.

Ask any serious athlete what helps them the most and they will tell you about these three things; Mental attitude, my coach and my massage therapist.

    Sports Massage is Different
A lot of people associate massage with relaxation and falling asleep. And, sometimes, when it's appropriate, that's what you do. But sports massage is different. Pre-event massage is stimulating and gets the muscles warm, the body ready, the blood pumping and the brain cool. The athlete is FULL of energy at this point and ready for action!

Post-event massage is more about slowing down again, relaxing and allowing the body to heal ready for the next event.

Phil is sports massage therapist to Chew Valley Rugby Club, near Bristol. Any sports person, athlete (amateur, professional or elite), sporting team or event that needs a sports massage therapist to attend, need only ask. I can be contacted here.

Which Injuries Will Benefit From Sports Massage?
  • Achilles Tendonitis This ankle inury is usually caused by excessive use of the calf muscle and tendon in extreme ranges of movement such as running up and down hills.
  • Calf Strains are usually caused by a sudden over-stretching of the muscle, or following ballistic activity involving the calf muscle, especially if the muscles are cold, tight or tired.
  • ACL Rupture Sudden high speed rotation of the knee, usually with the foot planted on the floor.
  • Lateral Meniscus Tear The cartilage in the knee (the meniscus) acts as a shock absorber between the thigh & the shin bone. When an abnormal pressure or a twist is applied, the meniscus is jammed between the bones causing the tissue to split.
  • Frozen Shoulder A frozen shoulder is caused by inflammation and thickening of the lining of the socket in which the shoulder joint sits.
  • Lower Back Pain Any movement which place abnormal stress or abnormal loading on the spine can cause injury. A sudden overload, lifting a heavy weight or a cumulative overload, like repeatedly pulling or lifting an object in an awkward position. May also develop from repeated poor posture.
  • Tennis Elbow This elbow injury occurs when the tendon becomes strained by activities which overuse the forearm muscles such as playing tennis, painting and ironing.
  • Wrist Strain Wrist sprains can occur by falling awkwardly onto the wrist or hand. Tennis players, golfers, gymnasts, shot putters.
  • Ankle sprain Ankle sprains occur when the foot and ankle range of movement is taken to its extreme. Too much strain is put on the inner and outer ankle ligaments. If the ankle injury is severe then the ligaments may become ruptured.
  • Hamstring Strain The cause for a hamstring injury may be a direct blow to the back of the thigh or from overstretching. In an acute injury, the hamstring muscles or tendons may tear as a result of a sudden over stretching.
  • Anterior Knee Pain Usual causes include over-pronation and poor training technique.
  • Meniscus Injuries A twisting or rotation force whilst bearing weight can cause cartilage damage. Perhaps by a direct blow in a tackle whilst playing contact sports.
  • Rotator Cuff Injury Direct trauma, like in a rugby tackle. Tennis players, golfers, javelin throwers can be affected.
  • Sciatica Sciatic problems can come from abnormal pressure on the nerves.
  • Quadricep Strain Quadriceps ruptures, partial ruptures or strains are usually caused by a sudden twist, over-stretch or an over contraction of the muscle.
  • Abdominal muscle injuries Injury to the abdominal muscles can be caused by gradual strains of the muscles or by a direct blow to the area whilst the muscles are contracting.
  • Shin splints Usually caused by the muscles medial to the tibia being overloaded repetitively. Perhaps during running, or due to inappropriate shoes, poor progression of exercise or biomechanical problems.
  • Lateral Collateral Strain This injury is caused during twisting movements or by forces applied to the outer aspect of the knee, for example during a tackle.
  • Patella Tendonitis Runner, footballers, weight lifters can be affected by this type of knee injury.
  • Shoulder Dislocation Dislocation at a joint means a bone comes out of its socket causing pain and deformity. Can affect rugby players, gymnasts and volleyball players.
  • Golfer’s Elbow Repetitive bending or sideways twisting of the wrist can damage the inner side of the elbow such as when playing golf or hanging up wallpaper.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are caused by compression of the median nerve.
  • And lots more!
  • Stress, anxiety, balance problems, digestive problems, fatigue, whiplash, joint pain, kyphosis, neck pain, pins and needles, scoliosis, tension, sinus problems etc. etc.
  • Don't wait. Make your appointment today. You'll be glad you did!
